Student Safety

In Manchester we have a 'Manchester Student Partnership' which incorporates; the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, Greater Manchester Police, Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue and the Student Union.  Feeding into this student safety group which comprises of safety specialises from across the organisations to work on campaigns about all aspects of personal safety and property security.  Manchester is a great place to be a student, but like any city with a large student population, it can unfortunately attract criminals.

Why students?
Most students have technology at their fingertips and carry portable, expensive items such as mobile phones, iPads, tablets and laptops. Student houses can also be full of electrical goods that are attractive to thieves, and you may be lucky enough to own a bike or a car.  If you are a student, we’d encourage you to down the Student Safezone App. More information can be found www.safezoneapp.com

WalkSafe+ Manchester

This safety app, which is free to download, is an initiative aimed at helping people make safe journeys no matter the time of day.  It lets people pick known safe routes through the city, as well as allowing them to share their location with family or friends, as well as sending an automatic alert out if a person fails to reach their intended destination.

The roll out of this app goes hand in hand with the steps already taken by the City Council and its partners across Manchester to make the nighttime economy safe for everyone, but especially women you can download the app for free here

Over the next few pages you will find some advice and tips for keeping safe and being a good resident while in Manchester.
