A milestone anniversary this year will set the stage for a book bonanza filled summer.

Manchester Central Library, known as the “jewel in the crown” of the city’s libraries, will be holding a series of fun-filled events in honour of its historic 90th anniversary.

Summer Celebrations will mean library-goers can prepare to bask in all things books through learning about the historical odes to the city and taking in heart-stopping romance fiction. There will also be magical story times with the Blue Peter Book Club and timeless lessons from books by Black British authors.

Open to hundreds of visitors each day, the library are anticipating millions to take part in events this summer season.

Manchester Central Library Summer Celebrations are:

  • Blue Peter Book Club Live; expect enchanting escapades and whimsical wonderlands through fascinating story times and get searching on the Blue Peter Badge Trail – Saturday 18 May
  • Manchester Histories Festival; take in a tapestry of tales about Manchester in captivating ten-minute stories - Friday and Saturday 7–8 June
  • Festival of Libraries; events from all-singing, all-dancing classical book characters – Sunday 16 June
  • Love Stories etc Festival; heart-felt retelling of contemporary romance fiction with book signings and author talks (ticket only) – Saturday 18 July
  • Manchester Central Library 90th anniversary; action-packed events with a special showcase of archive material through the years – Wednesday 17 July
  • Black British Book Festival – Author talks and a chance to amplify books by Black authors – Sunday 28 July

Councillor John Hacking, Executive Member for Employment, Leisure and Skills, said: “It’s an incredibly exciting to see the sheer amount and diversity of events we have in store to make the Manchester Central Library’s 90th anniversary a special one, but also not to forget to support the breadth of literary talent we have on offer for book lovers of any age.

“The Summer of Celebrations promises to be for families, students and the Manchester community for a time of learning and inspiration through storytelling, which will continue to cement our history as a cornerstone in the city.”
