Chickens and bees

Only chickens (not cockerels) and bees are permitted on our sites: 

  • tenants or groups must seek written permission to keep chickens or bees 
  • approval will be on a case by case basis and will be dependent upon the provision of suitable accommodation and the ability to provide good welfare  
  • anyone seeking such permission will be expected to provide proof of their qualifications to do so. 

Chickens 

Chickens must be kept in suitable numbers and in housing that complies with the terms of the allotment agreement and in accordance with current animal welfare legislation. Cockerels are not permitted on an allotment site.   

Bees 

Beehives can be placed on allotment plots provided that you meet certain criteria such as: 

  • having suitable qualifications/experience and 
  • being a member of a  Bee Keepers Association and 
  • registration with the National Bee Unit
