Transport and travel
The target for our transport and travel is to reduce CO₂ (carbon) emissions by up to 45% by 2025. We’re moving our fleet to electric vehicles and installing the infrastructure to charge them. We’re also supporting the shift to sustainable and active travel (ways to walk, wheel and cycle).
Key aims of engagement and policy change
We work with Transport for Greater Manchester, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Government. We're improving active travel and low-cost public transport. And we'll continue to secure funding to tackle air pollution. This work will make the city a better place to live, work and study in.
Key achievements from 2020 to 2025
- We’ve built one of the UK’s first low-carbon mobility hubs. It aims to reduce vehicle-use and improve air quality for residents. It has EV charging, cycle storage, parking for car shares, a parcel hub and community spaces. And it's a low-carbon build with photovoltaic panels and a green wall. - We became the European Capital of Cycling for 2024.
- We leased 43 all-electric vehicles and six hybrid vehicles for our fleet.
- We bought 12 electric cargo bikes and six electric cargo trailers.
- We have a new staff travel policy. And we support staff using workshops and our sustainable travel guide.
- Manchester Airport Group joined the Manchester Climate Change Partnership. And was a founding member of the Jet Zero Council.
- We have an active travel strategy and investment plan in place for Manchester. The five-year plan aims to make walking the natural choice for short journeys. It also aims to double cycling from 6% to 12% of journeys.
- We have a new electric vehicle charging strategy in place for Manchester. It sets out our role in providing more charging points across the city. Find out more about electric vehicle (EV) charging in Manchester.
