Charging away from home
Transport for Greater Manchester manage public electric vehicle (EV) charging points in Manchester. They're part of Greater Manchester's Be.EV network.
Travelling further afield? Zapmap lists all UK public charge points. Go to www.zap-map.com.
If you can charge at home, that's the most convenient option. If you don’t have a home charger, you may find it awkward to charge an EV. There are some community schemes that help neighbours to share home chargers.
Find out what we're doing to help to expand the public network.
Installing chargers
You may be able to install a home charger even if you do not have off-street parking, if you:
- can safely charge when parked on the street
- and have planning permission.
You must contact your local planning authority before installing a home charging point. And you must meet the planning requirements before installation.
If you want to install a charger at a private or shared car park, you should speak to the owner of the site.
Grants
You might be able to get a grant towards the installation costs, if you live in:
- a flat or
- rented accommodation.
You must own an eligible EV and your home must have its own off-street parking space. Find out more about the Government's EV charge point grant for renters and flat owners.
If you're a business, charity or public sector organisation you may be eligible for a grant. It would contribute to the up-front costs of a charge point. Find out more about the workplace charging scheme.
