Roads and transport Road closures for the Madonna Del Rosario Procession on Sunday 7 July 2024

The Madonna Del Rosario Procession will be taking place on Sunday 7 July between 1pm and 5pm. Some roads will close to make space for it.

Disturbance is expected to be low and delay minimal. 

Expected timings for the parade

Parade takes around 15 minutes to pass any one point

  • Start at 1.15pm at George Leigh Street
  • Left to Great Ancoats Street
  • Right to Newton Street
  • Cross over to Portland Street
  • Right to Oxford Street
  • Reach St Peter’s Square at 2.30pm
  • Leave St Peter’s Square at 3.15pm
  • Right to Princess Street
  • Left to Portland Street
  • Cross over to Newton Street
  • Left on to Great Ancoats Street
  • Right to George Leigh Street at 5pm

There are expected to be 1000 participants.

A parking suspension will cover the following road and all bays. This will be between 9am and 4pm. Loading will be accessible.

  • Oxford Road

Details

The procession will start from St Michael's RC Church in George Leigh Street, Ancoats at 1.15pm. It should reach St Peter’s Square by 2.30pm, and leave at 3.15pm returning to the church at 4.15pm

The parade starts on George Leigh Steet at 13.15 and will turn right Great Ancoats Street (southbound). It will turn left on Newton Street and cross over to Portland Street.

On Portland Street, the procession will cross the Metrolink lines. 

It will travel down Portland Street and turn right on to Oxford Street. It willcross over the Metrolink line and stop on St Peter’s Square.

The parade will restart and move to Princess Street and then left onto Portland Street. It will follow the same route back to George Leigh Street.

Where the procession crosses the Metrolink, it will be managed by lights.

The parade is managed by:

  • the Manchester Italian association 
  • with support from GTM Traffic Management 
  • and a MIA approved security company.

As in previous year the vast majority of attendees will be on foot with the Madonna carried at the front. The procession will also include performers with support vehicles at the back.
