Snow clearance

When heavy snow has fallen, we aim to clear major roads as quickly as possible. Snow ploughs are used in extreme conditions, on priority roads.

If you want to clear a path, cycleway or road yourself, there are tips and advice on the Government's website. Table salt works well on cleared areas to prevent any ice forming, but do not use water as it will only replace the snow with black ice, increasing the risk of injury.

There are no specific laws stopping you from clearing snow and ice on the pavements outside your property, pathways to your property or public spaces; people using areas covered by snow and ice have to be mindful of their own safety.

See the roads, pavements and cycle paths that we grit.
