Deansgate and Whitworth Street West Active Travel Fund

We're creating a cleaner, safer and more attractive route around the city centre. We're aiming for 90% of all peak morning trips to the city centre to be made by foot, cycle or public transport. This aim was set out in the City Centre Transport Strategy

It means having the right tram, rail and bus connections in the right places. And linked to high-quality routes for people walking, cycling and using wheelchairs. We secured Active Travel Funding to help make this happen. And we're working with Salford City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester to plan the future Deansgate.

They're ambitious plans with a focus on active travel, public space and public transport. Deansgate will transform from a traditional vehicle route to a place to visit and enjoy.

We want to:

  • encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle around the city
  • link walking, wheeling and cycling routes (to each other and to places where people want to go)
  • connect city centre rail and tram stations
  • reduce the amount of traffic entering the city centre
  • reduce the risk of road traffic accidents
  • create more public spaces for walking and wheeling

We consulted the public and local businesses about the proposed scheme. And we used the feedback to make changes. These include:

  • less disruption to those who live, work and visit the area
  • more loading and unloading areas for businesses
  • more disabled parking spaces
  • safer and more accessible junctions, crossings and bus stops for pedestrians and cyclists
