Transforming Deansgate

This is the future vision for Deansgate. We've got big ambitions that will take time to deliver. But we don’t want to wait. We’ll be introducing a range of projects to support our long-term plans to transform the area.

Deansgate is a hardworking street with lots to offer – full of shops, restaurants, bars and culture.  Lots of people live on or around the area and it's home to many businesses. It’s a bus, taxi, cycle and vehicle route. And an important link to our industrial and Roman heritage.

Deansgate has changed a lot during its long history. We want to help continue that growth to serve the changing city.  We commissioned a team to develop a vision and design for Deansgate.

You may have shared your views on some of the plans. We've consulted the public about several proposed projects. Such as the City Centre Active Travel Scheme or the interim designs for Deansgate. You may have seen the changes these have already brought to its layout.

We want to ensure Deansgate is suitable for current and future needs of the city – for everyone. We want to transform Deansgate – putting people and sustainable transport first.

We’ll think about how to:

  • improve space to walk, wheel and cycle
  • create space for businesses to use
  • ensure a safer night-time environment
  • improve air quality
  • support regeneration
  • provide for a wide range of access needs
  • improve how junctions work for cyclists and pedestrians

We secured funding of £14million for the transformation of Deansgate. This is being provided by the City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement. These funds are granted to support sustainable travel. Such as walking, cycling and public transport.

We're looking at the stretch of Deansgate from Victoria Bridge Street (near the cathedral) to Liverpool Road (by the Hilton Hotel).
