We’re committed to making everything we do at Manchester City Council as green as we can. Our award-winning events are no exception.
Almost all of Manchester Day runs on people power. The event sites are spread across the city centre. Anyone who needs electricity can plug into mains power. They don’t need to use generators. Where we do use generators, they run on bio-diesel. This fuel is renewable. It's usually made from recycled greases or vegetable oil.
Bring a refillable water bottle with you!
There are 70 locations across the city who have signed up to give out free water refills. You’ll also find several places where you can buy hot drink refills in a reusable cup. Download the free Refill app to find out more.
Fancy something a little stronger?
We have a reusable cup scheme in all our bars. Our food and drink traders don’t use single use plastics.
Travel
As always, we’re encouraging people to walk, run, or bike. They can also take public transit into town for Manchester Day. Save money on petrol and parking. Plan your sustainable journey using the Bee Network.
Keeping it green!
We’ve worked with outdoor arts specialists, Walk the Plank. They will help us bring you a low-carbon, sustainable Manchester Day to remember. Walk the Plank is committed to creating eco-friendly events. They have won many awards for their sustainable practice. This includes a 4* Creative Green award from Julie’s Bicycle for Manchester Day 2019.
Each year, we collect data on our energy usage, materials, waste, water use, and travel. We use the data to make changes for the next year. We aim to become a zero-carbon city by 2038.
This year’s Manchester Day is part of a national pilot. It will trial the use of a Green Events Code of Practice. The code aims to create a common understanding. It is about the best event sustainability. It will create clear standards for event organisers. It will also do so for local authorities and the supply chain. If successful, the code will be rolled out across the UK.
