Bridge closure
Update 25 March: the old bridge has been removed. Installation of a new bridge will follow later in the year.
Bailey Bridge has been removed due to safety concerns. The bridge was on the River Mersey, near Chorlton Water Park.
A contractor will design and install a new bridge. Surveyors will examine the bridge supports and see if they need any repairs. Once the design is complete, we'll submit a planning application for the new bridge. We'll then apply for permits from the Environment Agency to carry out work over the river. We'll build the new bridge when we get planning permission and Environment Agency Permits. We'll then transport the new bridge and install it on-site.
We know this is a popular route. So, we're working to design and install the new crossing point as soon as possible. However, the steps described above will each take several months to complete. We'll have a clearer timeline for the replacement when we have the bridge support surveys in May 2025.
We're reviewing the diversion route to ensure it's easy to use, easy to find and more accessible. We're working with key stakeholders to ensure the best possible diversion. We want it to feel good for everyone – whether you're walking or wheeling. If you have suggestions, please contact us.
We understand how disruptive and disappointing this is. The safety of our residents and visitors is our primary concern. We'll keep you updated every step of the way. For more information email parks@manchester.gov.uk.
The diverted route is around 1.09 miles (1.75km).
