Making Ancoats Streets quieter and safer

Proposals already consulted on – what you said, and what we’re doing

In August this year, we consulted around proposals to change the way that traffic moves in the area, changing some streets to one way, and adding filters which allow pedestrians and cyclists to pass through, but not vehicles, helping to deter rat running.

More than 80 people completed the web survey and around 30 more attended online and face-to-face events. Most people who responded live in the area and supported the proposals (more than 80% were very positive or positive, compared to 18% who were very negative or negative).

Several consistent themes emerged from the feedback which we received, and because of this we have made some changes to the proposals. These are:

  • Adding filters on Henry Street, Loom Street and Gun Street, and
  • Changing the give way priority on Jersey Street

We will be writing separately to residents on these streets to seek their feedback on these proposed changes.

Extra funding secured, have your say on more proposals to make the area safer for people walking and cycling

Additional funding has been secured through City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, which we are proposing to use for more measures to complement and work alongside the plans already shared in August.

These are shown on the downloadable map, and include:

  • Upgrading the junctions of Oldham Road with Poland Street and Radium Street
  • New crossings on Oldham Road and Poland Street Raised tables at the junctions of streets in Ancoats with Oldham Road (to slow traffic and indicate pedestrian right of way)
  • Upgrading the priority cycle route along George Leigh Street

This funding would also cover the cost of making the temporary filters already proposed permanent following the planned trial, if it is successful.

We want your views on these additional changes for the area. You can have your say by completing a short web survey using the link below, email us at ancoats@manchester.gov.uk or write to us at Ancoats Streets for All, Highways Service, Town Hall Extension, Albert Square, Manchester M60 2LA.

We are also holding online and in person events about the scheme where you can ask questions and give us your feedback:

  • Online public meeting - Wednesday 29 November, 6.30pm to 7.30pm, email:  ancoats@manchester.gov.uk to receive a link to a Microsoft Teams meeting.
  • In person drop in - Thursday 30 November, 4pm to 7pm at Halle St Michael's, 36-38 George Leigh Street, Ancoats, M4 5DG.
