Consultations and surveys Alleygates PSPO consultation

This consultation is now closed.

We are consulting on the extension of a number of alleygate Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPO) within Manchester City Council boundaries.

See which alleygates have orders.

Purpose of PSPOs

The order aims to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime by limiting access to the alleyways to residents of adjoining properties and other exempt people, such as emergency services and utility workers.

Why we are consulting

On 20 October 2017, ‘Alleygating’ Orders made under the Highways Act 1980 were converted to ‘Public Spaces Protection Orders’ by the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. These PSPOs were valid for three years, before needing to be reviewed and consulted on.

There is no intention to remove the gates, we are reviewing the PSPOs to decide if they should be extended for a further three years to October 2026. To do this, we need your views. The PSPOs were last reviewed and extended in 2020.

The consultation is open until 31 August 2023.

Reporting issues in alleyways

This consultation is not for requesting new alleygates, repair of existing ones or for reporting issues in the alleys.
