Consultations and surveys Make Ancoats' streets quieter and safer consultation

We are proposing the following filters and one way changes.

Traffic filter locations (using planters to create a filter)

  • A filter on Radium Street north of its junction with Jersey Street allowing pedestrian and cycle access.
  • A filter on Jersey Street to the south of the entrance to Mozart Close allowing pedestrian and cycle access.

We propose to allow access for pedestrians, cyclists and authorised vehicles only (by using a demountable bollard) at:

  • Bengal Street between its junctions with Blossom Street and Naval Street.
  • Blossom Street east of its junction with Sherratt Street (outside Halle St Peter’s).

Authorised vehicles means larger vehicles operated by the Halle (for safety reasons, to avoid them making manoeuvres in a pedestrian area), as well as emergency service and waste collection vehicles.

Proposed one way streets

It is proposed to make these streets one way for all traffic:

  • Poland Street, southeast bound between Oldham Road and Naval Street.
  • Poland Street, northwest bound between Jersey Street and Naval Street.
  • Portugal Street, northeast bound between Poland Street and Wadeford Close.
  • Portugal Street, southwest bound between Poland Street and Radium Street.
  • Wadeford Close, northwest bound between Portugal Street and Oldham Road.
  • Silk Street, southwest bound between Poland Street and Radium Street.
  • Naval Street, southwest bound between Poland Street and Radium Street.
  • Radium Street, northwest bound between Naval Street and Oldham Road.
  • Naval Street, northeast bound between Bengal Street and Radium Street.
  • Bengal Street, southeast bound between Oldham Road and George Leigh Street.
  • Bengal Street, northwest bound between Jersey Street and Blossom Street.
  • Blossom Street, southwest bound between Bengal Street and Murray Street.
  • Murray Street, southeast bound between Blossom Street and Hood Street.

At the junctions of roads with Oldham Road, heavy ‘rhino’ barriers will be used to enforce the one way flow of traffic, while in other areas there will be signs.

On some roads, the restriction is proposed to be one way, except for cyclists, who are permitted to travel in both directions, including:

  • George Leigh Street, southwest bound between Poland Street and Radium Street.
  • George Leigh Street, northeast bound between Bengal Street and Radium Street.
  • Bengal Street, southeast bound between Oldham Road and Naval Street.

We need feedback about the proposals from local residents, businesses and people who visit the area. We will also accept feedback throughout the six month trial to let us know how it is working.

Download the plans showing the proposed changes to traffic flow, and the safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists which would be created.

We are holding online and in person events about the scheme where you can ask questions and give us your feedback:
