People and communities Help for disabled people

Breakthrough UK

Breakthrough UK has a text service for Greater Manchester. It connects people to the local emergency arrangements. You can text rather than calling or going online. By the next working day, you'll get a message with details of help in your area. Text 07860 022 876.

Energy and water bills

Priority Service Register

If you struggle to pay energy bills, ask your energy supplier to add you to the Priority Service Register. You'll get extra help and they cannot disconnect you during winter (from 1 October to 31 March).

Supplier support

Many gas and electricity suppliers can help if you struggle to pay your bill or owe them money. But the support varies and can change. Check with your supplier to find out what they offer.

Scope

The charity, Scope, gives free advice to help manage energy and water needs. The service is for any disabled person (or households where one or more disabled people live). Go to their website at www.scope.org.uk/disability-energy-support.

Advice for people using oxygen concentrators at home

If you use an oxygen concentrator at home, you can get a rebate for the electricity it uses. The company that supplies your concentrator can make payments to your bank account. Call the Electricity Rebates (BOC Home Oxygen Service) team free on 0800 136 603. Or the Electricity Refund (Air Liquide Healthcare) rebate team free on 0800 781 9939.

Personal budgets

Disability Rights UK have a free helpline. It gives information about support services and how to get social care funding. It’s open from 9.30am to 1.30pm every Tuesday and Thursday. Call 0330 995 0404.
