Ward-specific objectives
Nature and Biodiversity
- Work with the community and others to create at least three new wildflower areas. We'll use existing public green space and My Wild Neighbourhood project funding.
- Work with the neighbourhoods team to transform two alleyways or urban spaces. We'll make them greener over the year. If needed, we'll using Neighbourhood Investment Fund (NIF) for funding.
- Work with the Arbour team and City of Trees to locate at least two areas for tree planting. We may use the Woodland Creation Accelerator Fund.
- Start community activities at the Croft, alongside Groundwork and the Community Development team.
Children and Young People
- Work with Manchester Active to deliver at least two Active Street events by the end of the year.
- Work with young people at the Hideout Youth Centre. Together with Health Me Healthy Communities, we'll help them launch a nature-related project. The project will focus on creating a trail. We aim to have the full trail created by the end the year.
- Over the year, start at least one bulb planting session with a local school.
- Aim to get at least one new eco-school in the ward by the end of the year.
- Work with our Education team to support the year's Green School Network events. Encourage all schools in the ward to be involved.
Transport, active travel, air quality
- Launch one junior Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) scheme with a Gorton school.
- Establish a walking group in a Gorton Park. Work with the community development team and the Walking Mums Club to do it. We hope to engage with mothers who may be feeling isolated or lacking confidence.
- Continue building community interest on the Yellow Brick Road. We'll do this to coincide with planned improvement works. We'll use the improvements as an opportunity to speak to more people in the area. We'll help find funding for any groups that want to plant greenery along the route.
- Make pathway improvements to Tannery Way by the end of the year. The community payback team will help. And we'll make the most of the social value parts of our contracts to find people to help.
Things we buy, use and bin
- Work with Biffa to give at least 50 people direct support to recycle. For example, by handing out recycle split bags and/or food caddies.
- Establish Gorton Hub as a Refill station. Get five other organisations to sign up to the Refill app as water refill stations.
- Over the year, use NIF to support at least two groups that promote sustainable fashion.
Food
- Encourage or help at least 20 households to recycle more. We'll do this by delivering split bags and/or food caddies.
- Ensure that all food options at every event we organise are vegetarian or vegan. And where possible, to have no single use plastics.
- Over the year, help fund or support at least three groups focused on:
- food growing; or
- reducing food waste.
Homes and energy efficiency
- Distribute at least 500 energy efficient light bulbs. We'll do this in partnership with others, like Groundwork
- Collaborate with partners such as EnergyWorks to promote energy efficiency measures. And we'll signpost people to support schemes at two events throughout the year, at least.
Engagement Awareness Raising
- Organise a Climate Fresk session for partner organisations and VCSE groups.
- Over the year, make sure that at least 20% of NIF funding supports climate action projects.
- Use events to engage at least 40 people on climate change and cutting their carbon footprint.
