Moss Side

  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and Biodiversity:

    • Successfully deliver the My Wild Neighbourhood nature and biodiversity improvement project. By the end of the year, plant over 1,000 flower bulbs with 10 different community groups or schools in Moss Side.
    • Build on Sow the City's 2025 Nature of Moss Side report. Bring local partners together in summer 2025 to outline actions for the year.
    • Work with Moss Care St Vincent to deliver a project of green infrastructure investment in Moss Side as part of the "Old Reno site" development.

    Young People:

    • Encourage at least four resident-led Play Street events in the ward by the end of the year.
    • Support Recycle Bee's School Greening Programme funding bids in Hulme and Moss Side. Help them to deliver two projects over the year.

Sustainable Transport, Active Travel and Clean Air:

    • Collaborate with Rusholme on the successful delivery of the Wilmslow Road corridor programme. Advocate for more biodiversity investment and continued cycling priority.
    • Secure funding for “tredges” in schools over the year. Use Lancaster University’s 2022 "Protecting Playgrounds" study to inform planting decisions. Aim to plant a tredge in at least one school in Moss Side.
    • Run a series of "Bling Your Bike" road safety sessions with Bee Pedal Ready. Secure funding to run the sessions in schools during Road Safety Week in November 2025. Aim to engage at least 100 Moss Side residents on cycle safety.

Things We Buy, Use and Throw Away:

    • Ensure Biffa or other waste partners are present at every event hosted throughout the year. Help them engage with at least 50 residents on waste and recycling.
    • Undertake a cleaning and greening campaign in the Rusholme District Centre. Deliver it in partnership with businesses and residents by the end of the year.
    • Ensure that all events throughout the year avoid single-use plastics such as disposable coffee cups.
    • Host at least one cleaning and greening event during the 2026 Great British Spring Clean. Aim to engage at least 25 people at the event.

    Sustainable Food:

    • Collaborate with the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star to create a food growing hub. Utilise their new green space for the local community and Moss Care St Vincent Environmental Champions to use.

    Homes and Energy Efficiency:

    • Share details of government-funded support schemes for energy efficiency improvements with residents. Aim for 10% more referrals to the Greater Manchester Retrofit Portal than in 2024–2025.

    Engagement, Raising Awareness, Influencing Change:

    • Collaborate with Moss Care St Vincent on a funded Environmental Champions programme. Empower residents with knowledge and skills to take action on climate change.
    • Collaborate with partner organisations in Hulme, Moss Side and Rusholme to deliver a joint project. Aim to deliver at least one clean and green initiative by the end of the year.
    • Attend community events to speak with residents about climate change and the environment. Engage at least 50 Moss Side residents on the topic.
