  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and biodiversity:

    • Work with Groundwork to secure the re-opening of Slade Lane Community Garden. Use the green space as a conduit for further community action and as a model for green space renovation
    • Re-constitute Friends of Crowcroft Park as a first step toward ongoing community-led green space improvement work in the park
    • Ensure that Sustainable Northmoor Urban Growers (SNUG) implement their project funded through the Greater Manchester Green Spaces fund.
    • Support ongoing tree planting in Longsight and aim to see at least 20 new trees planted by the end of the year.

    Young people:

    • Work with Keep Manchester Tidy to get Eco-School accreditation at Stanley Grove Academy by the end of the year.
    • Assist Youth Elements establish to themselves over the year by regularly checking in.
    • Promote the Green Schools Network to all schools in Longsight that are not already on it

    Transport, active travel, air quality:

    • Arrange and host at least one Active Street event over the year
    • Build on the success of the Crowcroft Park Walking group to encourage further take up of active travel.
    • Utilise Road Safety week (November 2023) to highlight issues around engine idling and the benefits of walking to school.

    Things we buy, use and bin:

    • Use NIF to fund at least two sustainable fashion projects over the year.
    • Get at least five new locations signed up as Refill locations on the Refill app.
    • Host at least one event focused on promoting reusable bottles – linked to money saving
    • Install a public water fountain at Longsight Market.

    Food:

    • Reduce food loss and waste, by supporting local food banks and other services
    • Include a provision on funding for religious festival food spending. Clause on what to do with any leftover food. Build in accountability for food waste.

    Homes and energy efficiency:

    • Promote information about energy efficiency, saving money. Include at engagement events. Hold a stall at the market in the Autumn on household energy efficiency
    • Deliver at least 100 LED lightbulbs to residents as a way to improve their home energy efficiency and start conversations around climate change and domestic energy efficiency.
    • Work with the Selective Licensing team to successfully implement Selective Licensing in the Royals area over the year – helping to improve the quality of private rented accommodation in the area.

    Engagement, raising awareness, influencing change:

    • Collaborate with SNUG in mapping existing community environmental projects to inform where support is needed for new projects and for existing ones
    • Host a climate change or carbon footprint stall at four or more events throughout the year
    • Host a Climate Fresk session for Longsight VCSE groups
    • Ensure all environmental communications and engagement throughout the year are appropriate and relevant to the communities of Longsight

  2. Who else is involved, and what they're doing

    In Our Nature:

    This is a partnership programme between Manchester Climate Change Agency, Hubbub, Groundwork Greater Manchester, Amity, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Research and Manchester City Council. Between now and 2025 ION will be working with communities across the city to connect the climate crisis to practical actions we can all take to make a difference, reduce our carbon emissions, save money, and learn something new.

     

    Sustainable Northmoor Urban Growers (SNUG):

    This community action group is focused on enhancing the green spaces in Longsight. They successfully won Greater Manchester Green Spaces funding and will be implementing their plans throughout the year. Find out more on their Instagram page @snug_mcr

     

    Selective Licencing in the Royals area of Longsight:

    Selective Licensing forces landlords to gain a license to rent properties in an area. In doing so, all manner of things can be assessed such as the provision of an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). Find out more online at manchester.gov.uk
