Skip permit

  1. Summary

    If you are registered with us you can place skips within Manchester providing the address pays either council tax or business tax to Manchester City Council check which council.

    There are 2 types of skip processes:- 

    • Skips with restrictions – if you want to place a skip in a restricted area or location, you need prior approval from us - these need 10 days notice. Once approval has been given you then need to apply for a skip permit; or 
    • Skips in all other areas. It is the responsibility of the skip operator to apply for the permit and not the householder. If the skip is to be placed on a driveway, private land or garden a skip permit is not required.

    Skip permits are valid for a maximum of 7 days.

    If a skip is placed on the highway without a permit or in breach of any of the conditions, we may remove the skip and recover any reasonable expenses incurred from the owner of the skip.

    Apply for a skip permit

    Obtain approval for a skip permit with restrictions - (these require 10 days notice, an approval reference will be issued which will be required when you 'Apply for a Skip Permit' - failure to obtain prior approval could result in monies be retained and no permit being issued)

    Notify us of any changes - to your details including if your Waste Carrier Licence or Public Liability insurance expires during this period, you will need upload new policy details

  4. Attachments required

    Please email highwaylicences@manchester.gov.uk with the following:

    • Evidence of valid 'Public Liability' Insurance (not less than £10 million)
    • A scale plan of the site showing the position of the structure/obstruction on the highway/road.                                    

  5. Processing and timescales

    A skip permit will be issued and sent to the email address provided.

    Skips with restrictions will be referred and within 10 days you will be notified of the decision, where approval is given, a skip permit will then need to be processed.

    A skip permit is valid for a maximum of 7 days.
