A664 Rochdale Road from Parkmount Road to Walter Street

  1. Improvement details

    • Create uncontrolled pedestrian crossings (with tactile paving) on Shepherd Street, Blackley Park Road, Russet Road, Parkmount Road, Smethurst Street and Cockcroft Street at their junctions with Rochdale Road.
    • Improve the controlled push-button pedestrian crossing on Rochdale Road between the junctions with Blackley Park Road and Russet Road by changing tactile paving to match current regulations and extending the crossing zig zags across the entrance to Blackley Park Road.
    • Renew existing road markings on Smethurst Street.
    • Add centre hatching on the carriageway of Rochdale Road from the junction with Smethurst Street to number 949 Rochdale Road, to reduce the effective carriageway width. This will include a ‘turning pocket’ for cars turning right from Rochdale Road (southbound) into Cockroft Street, and double yellow lines on the east side of Rochdale Road to protect the narrowed road width.
    • Close Shepherd Street at its junction with Rochdale Road to prevent turning movements and make crossing safer for pedestrians. This will be achieved by installing build-outs and bollards at 1.5m intervals, to allow pedestrians and cyclists to pass through, but not motor vehicles.
    • Remove existing 20MPH signs at the entrance to Shepherd Street from Rochdale Road.
    • Adding double yellow lines on the south side of Shepherd Street and around the closed ends of the build-out, to prevent parking on the footway or in front of the build-out.
    • Install ‘NO THROUGH ROAD’ signs at the east end of Shepherd Street
    • Install ‘Motor vehicles prohibited’ signs at the west end of Shepherd Street, and ‘No through road for vehicular traffic’ signs at the east end of Shepherd Street.
